Sheriff’s press release on boating accident

Saturday evening, June 25th at approximately 9:50pm four persons were injured in a boating crash on the Colorado River, near the old Sundance nightclub. Thomas Kochinas, age 31 of Newport Beach, CA was operating a 20-foot Bayliner boat northbound on the Parker Strip when the vessel impacted a rock outcropping known locally as “Idiot Rock”.

Kochinas suffered minor injuries in the crash and was treated and released at La Paz Regional Hospital. Passenger Wesley Wilkes, age 31 of Glendora, CA was flown to a Phoenix hospital, where he was treated and released for moderate injuries. Arial Kanner, age 25, also of Glendora, CA is in fair condition at John C. Lincoln Hospital while Nadine Ryser, age 25 of Durango, CO remains in critical condition, also at John C. Lincoln Hospital. Both were also flown from the scene to the trauma centers.

No other vessels were involved. The La Paz County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash. No charges have been filed, pending blood test results on the operator. Once the investigation is complete, it will be forwarded to the La Paz County Attorney’s Office for review and determination of charges, if any.
