La Paz County Sheriff’s Department Press Release
[Photograph removed at the request of family]
On October 7, 2011 at approximately 12:54 am, a vehicle driven by Benjamin Brodie of Parker, 20, was involved in a collision off mile post 4.5 on Shea Road, Parker, AZ. The vehicle, a 1990 2 door Mitsubishi Eclipse, left the roadway while traveling westbound (Shea Road), at a very high rate of speed.
The driver (Benjamin Brodie), was able to contact Central Dispatch via cell phone and request emergency services. Upon the arrival of Law Enforcement (C.R.I.T. Police and La Paz County Sheriff’s Office), they were able to locate the vehicle, driver and three occupants. At that time, medical treatment was administered to the driver (Brodie) and one of the passengers (Samantha Jo Owens) who were subsequently transported by air to Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix. The two other passengers in the vehicle, Brian Babcock, 24, and Kayla Conway, 20, were found to be deceased at the scene.
During the course of the preliminary investigation, it appears that alcohol and speed were the contributing factors of the collision. Due to serious nature of the incident, no further information will be released at this time. The La Paz County Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of the Arizona Department of Public Saefty out of Phoenix, is continuing the investigation into this matter.
