A former mayor of the town of Quartzsite was piloting a plane that crashed near Parker Airport Thursday. Both he and his passenger are not believed to be hurt.

Richard Oldham, founding mayor of Quartzsite and the owner of a small air strip on the west side of the town, is reported to have crash landed a small aircraft with one passenger in a desert area near the Parker Python gauntlet race course area behind Parker Cemetery.

Oldham is a pilot with many years’ experience. No word on the cause of the crash at this time. La Paz County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the crash, saying that the plane was damaged but there were no injuries to the aircraft’s occupants. Parker Fire Department was among the responding agencies.

It is unknown whether the crash was related to stormy weather the same day.
