The Parker Panthers started the 2015 Pop Warner football season at the beginning of this month, with kids from 5 years old involved in the league.
Pop Warner football has been around since the inception of the league in 1929 by founder Joseph J. Tomlin in Philadelphia. Since then, participation has steadily increased to today’s record numbers. Well over a quarter of a million children are involved in the program’s football and cheerleading activities.
Parker Panthers Football and Cheer is run by a group of volunteers, including board members, coaches, team parents, trainees, water boys and girls. There is no profit in the organization, which exists for the benefit of Parker community youth and emphasizes academic as well as athletic success. The participants are taught about the values of competition, and also must keep their grades at a satisfactory level in order to attain the ultimate prize of being named a Pop Warner National Champion.
The season started August 1st and could end in November depending on playoffs.
“We are growing and in need of the community’s help for the local youth,” said board member Meghan Romanek. “We have grown more this year then we have in a while. When my son first started we only had three football teams and no cheer team. He is going into his third season and we now have four teams and two cheer squads. Our Junior Pee Wee team is required for the first time to have two jerseys, one light one dark, for away games and home games. We need to purchase uniforms for them. Not to mention cheer uniforms and more uniforms for all the new kids plus extra equipment. We are a non profit and can be used for a tax write off.”
