Fiery crash kills 4 on I-10

UPDATE: The 3 occupants of the van in this story have been identified as both members of the Liverpool, England-based band Her’s and their tour manager. The band had just finished their show at the Rebel Lounge in Phoenix and we’re headed to a show in Santa Ana. More here.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Four people died early Wednesday morning after a fiery head-on collision between a van and a pickup truck on I-10 in rural La Paz County, according to the Department of Public Safety.

Shortly after 1 a.m., DPS and the La Paz County Sheriff’s Department responded to reports of a wrong-way driver on the westbound lanes of I-10 near milepost 64, which is between the Vicksburg turnoff and Salome Road.

Kameron Lee, a DPS spokesperson, said that the wrong-way driver, who was driving a Nissan pickup truck, collided head-on with a 15-passenger Ford van carrying 3 people. Both vehicles went up in flames, Lee said, and all the occupants of both vehicles died, including the wrong-way driver, and the 3 occupants of the van. No names were released.

Although an alcoholic beverage was found in the debris, Lee said it is unclear who it belonged to and there are no conclusions being drawn yet.

Westbound I-10 was backed up for miles for a time, but reopened before daylight.

  12. Prayers to the families of all. So sad, how many more tragedies in that area will it take for a barrier of some type to prevent all these head on collisions around that area. Crazy!

I Don’t understand why they don’t make this a 4 lane hwy or at least add passing lanes. How many people need to die every year before they do something to fix the problem?!

  14. KrystalLaffoon N BobbyRobledo I agree that something needs to be done! There is plenty of room to make this a 4 lane hwy.

  15. Ummm. It is Interstate 10. A freeway, already 4 lane, divided highway, 2 lanes each direction. A wide, 100 foot or so, swath of land, usually with a depression or other natural barrier in the middle.

  23. Dana Rupert Back Wright – read the article. Interstate 10 has 4 lanes with a physical barrier (median) separating the east and westbound lanes.

  25. It doesn’t matter how many lanes they have even in Phoenix with the 4 lane highways with barriers we still have wrong way drivers because people are distracted, drunk or just not paying attention. We’re set up on a grid, our roads are flat and straight for the most part, when you’re driving the wrong way there are big red signs that say wrong way especially when you try to go on to an off ramp and the road indicators are red instead of white since it’s the back of them. Until people start paying attention and stop getting behind the wheel when they shouldn’t be this will continue to occur. I happened to be in the area where a wrong way driver got on the freeway last year and I took pictures and counted the signs of that off ramp. There were 9 signs saying wrong way, do not enter, etc. Took pictures as a class assignment to show it’s well marked and you can’t miss the signs but that driver still ignored them and got on the freeway.

  28. I expect the truck driver was attempting suicide. He succeeded. Too bad the selfish bastard took thee innocent people with him. I have seen the interstates in Texas no deep ditches. He could have easily got in the right lane and didn’t. He was obviously aware he was on the wrong side and had encountered multiple other vehicles. Sounds like running with lights out as well semi had to take the shoulder to avoid him.. ????.

  29. An elderly man decided to take his own life. He hit my sons dump truck at the front left wheel and flipped it right over. When they want to die they don’t care! Luckily my son was physically ok but It still bothers him.
