Boat accident near Emerald Cove leaves operator in intensive care

On April 16, 2021 at approximately 10:23 pm, the San Bernardino County Sheriff Department’s Boat Accident Investigation Team was dispatched to a major injury boat collision that occurred on the California shoreline at Bass Point on the Parker Strip.

Through investigation and interviews, it was determined Mark Thene was operating a 19-foot SeaRay southbound on the Colorado River at a high rate of speed given the time of night. The vessel collided into the shoreline and came to rest approximately 20 feet up the embankment. Mark Thene, the solo occupant and operator was first treated by Buckskin Fire Department, who then transported him to River Medical, who brought him to La Paz Regional Hospital prior to investigators arriving on scene and was ultimately flown to a trauma center in Phoenix. Thene suffered major injuries and is currently in the Intensive Care Unit.

This boat collision is an ongoing investigation and alcohol appears to be a factor. Anyone with information regarding the collision is urged to contact Deputy Brian Weck at the Colorado River Station at (760) 326-9200. Callers wishing to remain anonymous are urged to call the We-Tip Hotline at 1-800-78-CRIME (27463), or you may leave information on the We-Tip Hotline at www.wetip.com.

  15. It’s not the first time a boat has hit bass point at night. Happened several years ago with several fatalities.

  33. So sad. Many accidents at this point.
First responders used our friends dock, the victim mentioned his dog.
Wonder if it was on board and/or found?

  41. Couldn’t believe what we were seeing. The boat on that rock/sm mountain @ bass cove.

Boating after dark is so risky but adding a day of drinking it’s insane. I agree 100% they should have left the boat there for people to realize it can happen to them.

Any updates on the driver or his dog?

  42. I was with the group that came to his aid before Buckskin arrived on the scene by boat. The immediate actions of my friends helped to save his life as he was hanging over the side of the boat lifeless when we arrived. The dog a labradoodle that appeared to have suffered a broken leg. We kept the dog with us until animal control picked him up.
